CAA Announces “Roads to Realism” and “GoFigure!”

 

The Cooperstown Art Association proudly announces two new group exhibits;  “Roads to Realism,” and “Go Figure!”  Both shows will open Friday, March 30th with a reception from 5-7pm and will be on display through April 25^th.

 

“Roads to Realism” will feature oil paintings by Charles Hartley, oil paintings and drawings by Sugwon Kang, photographs by Lawrence Mirarchi and mixed media pieces by Carol Saggese. 

Charles Hartley has no formal training in art, but has been fortunate enough to have visited a number of the great art museums of the world and seen examples of the finest paintings.  He and his wife have traveled extensively in the past twenty-five years, mostly to somewhat less developed countries with exotic sights and people, and have documented their adventures with photographs. He paints mostly from his travel photographs, picking the subject matter when it offers something he thinks he will enjoy painting.

 

As a child, growing up in Korea, Sugwon Kang drew pictures before he learned to write. Before he was a teenager Kang was drawing people’s faces, to the delight of his parents and elders. He never went to an art school, nor did he study with an established artist. Kang’s participation in a weeklong workshop with portrait painter Daniel Greene in the summer of 2001 proved an important source of encouragement. “There’s much to be said for taking up painting as an avocation”, he says. “You don’t have to prove anything; you just do it for the fun of it!”

 

Lawrence Mirarchi grew up in Brooklyn, became enamored of upstate New York, and settled in Oneonta.  In addition to teaching chemistry at Hartwick College, he has pursued a life-long interest in photography. He has been especially fascinated with the local landscape, where he finds personal meanings and metaphors in its endless variety and transformations.

 

Carol Saggese is a native of this area, residing in Oneonta, New York. Her works are done in watercolor, mixed media, ink in the style of Chinese Brush Painting and graphite. She uses these mediums to achieve unique textures and impressions. Carol is a self taught artist and has attended workshops conducted by Don Getz, Marian Simpson, and Tom Natoli. She most recently studied with Gerald Brommer in the hill towns of Tuscany, Italy.

 

“Go Figure” features sketches by the CAA Monday Night Drawing Group which is a casual group of artists that meet every week to sketch without an instructor.  Bill Schaeffer states, “It’s possible that we’re the longest running “class” in the history of the Art Association.  At this point I’m the only one that traces back to the beginning.  I’m not good with dates, but it was easily over 15 years ago.  At one point, we had 3 generations of my family drawing together (my mother, daughter, and myself).” “Go Figure” will feature work by Morgan Ackerly, Beladee Griffiths, Christine Heller, Linda Kosmer, Ron Lytel, Christopher O’Meara, Bill Schaeffer, Lilian Voorhees and Vicki Whicker.
